In the hills of Bamendankwen, Mr. Ngamaleu Franck Gilles was about to raise a three-storey commercial building — three floors of ambition resting on sloping highland ground of dark clay over loose, shifting ferralitic and pyroclastic soils, the kind that turn treacherous the very moment the rains arrive. One wrong assumption here and years of investment crack from the foundation up.
